Top retail space innovations

More than 200 guests, including one of the country’s most pre-eminent industrial designers, Brian Steinhobel, were transported into a world of Steampunk science fiction in Kramerville last week, when winners of the annual PG Bison 1.618 Competition were announced.

The competition, which has provided a platform to showcase the incredible talent in student architecture and design for the last 20 years, asked contestants to design a retail space of international standards located in the Protea Court of Sandton City. Students were required to create their own brand to be showcased in this space, keeping in mind features of adaptability and sustainability.

Secunda’s green hotel

In an effort to make an old building in Secunda more commercially viable, Johan Rosslee, owner and developer of the building, decided to transform it into a hotel. However, the building posed a loading problem. So, architect John Deppe from Designing Stone Edge was tasked with sourcing alternative building materials for a lightweight walling system.

Deppe decided to use Gyproc GypWall Soundbloc 70AS/F60S57 because it allowed for four extra rooms to be built on each floor. This lightweight construction system, with a wall thickness of 122 mm limiting the transmission of sounds up to 57dB, incorporates a lightweight steel stud and track structure, as well as a glass wool insulation made from up to 80 % recycled material.

Increasing awareness of green water heating systems

The latest Census information has revealed that the technologies available on the market to heat water in an environmentally-friendly way amount to 4.9 million units, and the number is growing. As a result, the Green Plumbing Advisory Centre (GPAC) has assessed the market in order to learn how to increase the purchases of solar water heaters and heat pumps.

GPAC circulated an online survey in May and June this year to assess obstacles in the way of the green hot water systems trade. It was completed by 646 homeowners and 388 professionals, consisting of plumbers, architects, builders, building inspectors and quantity surveyors. These are the results:

Collaborations for success

The National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) and the Cement & Concrete Institute (C&CI), as well as the NHBRC and the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) have recently concluded a memorandum of understanding (MoU) formalising their collaboration.

The MoU between the NHBRC and the C&CI, signed by C&CI’s managing director, Bryan Perrie and NHBRC’s then acting CEO, Dr Jeffrey Mahachi, includes research collaboration; training NHBRC staff, nominees or seconded individuals; as well as the provision of resources for research, testing and training.
